Three weeks in and we're still alive!

Sydney turned three weeks old yesterday and I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. I've been terrible about blogging about anything (just some tweets here and there) but gave me a little kick in the pants and reminded me to start!

Week One:

I had a cesarean section, so the first week is a bit of a blur. I was in the hospital from Saturday-Wednesday so those days were pretty easy since the nurses did almost everything for us. My parents stayed until Saturday and my in-laws stayed until Sunday, so we weren't alone with a new baby until she was a week old. Having our parents with us was a huge help since I couldn't get up and about very much, but I will say that it was sort of nice to have our house to ourselves and settle in to our little family of three. Sydney had her first pediatrician appointment the day after we were discharged so the doctor could check her weight. She lost 10% of weight in the hospital (7lbs 9 oz to 6lbs 13 oz) so the nurses had us all freaked out that something was wrong. The pediatrician reassured us that it was totally normal and there was no need to worry since she was already back up to 7lbs 5 oz.

Week Two:

The second week was a bit painful for us both since I couldn't really do anything and poor James had to do all kinds of little things for me (refill my water bottle, get us food, etc). He was (is!) such a trooper and didn't complain once. The highlight of the week was my follow up doctor appointment for a blood pressure and incision check; blood pressure was still a bit high but everything else was fine. Sydney slept the whole time which was so awesome! We tried to take a walk around the block that week and while I made it, I was struggling at the end. It was too soon after the surgery so I decided to give myself a few more days before trying it again.

The post-partum hormones really started to kick my butt in week 2. I had a couple of breakdowns during week 1, but not nearly as bad as week 2. I just had overwhelming sadness - mostly starting in the early evening - and anything could turn me into a sobbing mess. Thankfully, a dear friend checked on me often and let me know that I was not alone. She really got me through those days when I felt like I was alone and I hope that I can be there for my mommy girlfriends like she was for me. I also really struggled with the fact that I had planned for a completely natural birth but ended up with a c-section. It was one of the last things I wanted to happen, but I know that a healthy baby is more than some people get, so I am SO THANKFUL and blessed. I think that the pp hormones really messed with my head as well and made it seem worse than it was! A friend posted a link to a blog post about c-sections which also really helped me get through that little bump in the road. It's funny how sometimes, what you need to read or see or hear is put right in front of you at just the right time.

I had my first solo outing with Sydney (follow up dr appt for me) and she did really well. I had to feed her while at the doctors' office, but just asked for somewhere to nurse. I was put on bp medicine. ugh.

We also went on our first visit to see friends that weekend which was so nice! We just hung out and talked and appreciated getting out of the house for a while.

I hired a lactation consultant to help me with breastfeeding since I had no idea if I was doing anything the right way. She was obviously eating okay since she gained weight, but I didn't know much else. The LC helped me with positions which immediately eased the pain on my back and wrist.  She also assured me that everything else was going well as far as supply and her latch, so that was a huge relief. Her fee was worth the comfort and peace of mind and was some of the best money I've spent since the baby has arrived!

Sydney also had her first trip to the Emergency Room that week. :( Her stomach was very distended and it really freaked us out. We knew we wouldn't really sleep with the fear of something happening to her, so we took her to the local ER. Seven hours later, we learned it was just gas. She slept almost the whole time and wasn't phased at all. James and I were both really sleep deprived by the time we got home, but we made up for it later and took turns napping. A friend told me "we've all made the ER fart trip!" so that made me feel a bit better.

Week Three:

We really got out of the house a lot! We made trips to Target, Costco, more doctor and ped appts, dinner, lunch, friends' houses, etc. Sydney sleeps through almost everything. We did a newborn photo shoot with a great photographer in our area and are really excited to see the proofs. We've had a few more visitors and she steals the hearts of everyone she meets. <3

We made the decision to move her to the nursery this week in preparation for James going back to work next week. The baby handled it much better than I did...I cried a bit at first, but have really slept much better since she's been in her own room because babies are LOUD. They grunt and fart and snort and squeak and I'm sure our noises didn't help her sleep better either.  She seems to have a longer stretch of sleep first which is anywhere from 3-5 hours, and then two shorter stretches of 2-3 hours. I haven't felt really sleep deprived since the ER visit and appreciate that she is a very good sleeper!

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things so I'll add more if I remember, but that's what has been happening with us. Having a baby is more wonderful than I could have imagined and love more than I ever thought possible!

Due Date - 40 weeks!

Well...today is the big day! The day that she's SUPPOSED to come. However, most people know a due date is an estimate and there are no guarantees so we're just waiting....and waiting....and waiting. Or at least that's what it feels like!

I have a doctor's appointment today at 2pm so I'm hoping for a little progress and a 'what happens next' discussion with the doctor.

Now I really understand why people say the last few weeks are so tough. The pelvic pain and pressure is much worse, walking to the kitchen almost requires a nap, and it's difficult to do anything in a speed other than SLOWWWWWW. Add extreme anticipation to all of that - and everyone and their brother asking how you feel and if baby has come yet - and it's just a big mixed bag of crazy! I've loved being pregnant but I can't wait for our daughter to be in our arms!

Fingers are crossed that our little girl wants to come meet everyone soon. :)

39 weeks

9 3/4 months pregnant and so ready to meet Sydney! I've had minor cramping and contractions here and there but nothing consistent. I have a doctor's appointment today so I hope she tells me that there is a little progress. In earlier pregnancy I never understood why someone would WANT to be induced, but it's becoming more and more obvious as I go on! I still don't want to be induced but I can see why other women opt to have it done right after 40 weeks. My doctor doesn't want me to go past 41 weeks so Sydney will be here within two weeks no matter what!

I started working from home last Thursday which has been SO NICE. No more hour+ commute each way and one of the biggest pluses is that I can take a nap if I am tired. I'm getting things done around the house when I have spurts of energy. I scrubbed the kitchen floor on Monday, vacuumed our bedroom yesterday, and hope to tidy up and vacuum the living and dining areas today. It helps to stay busy all the time so working and cleaning seem to go well together. I know the dogs are happy that I'm home pretty much all the time! I've been taking them for walks around the neighborhood - or rather, they are taking me for the walks - it's much easier to let them pull me along! :o) It's so nice to get out of the house and into the fresh air.

James has been working crazy hours at work for a couple of weeks but all of that is over today. Not that his paternity leave will be a vacation, but at least he won't have to go into work for a month once the baby arrives. I'm so thankful that he'll be home with us!

38w1d watermelon belly!

This is no bump...this is an all-out watermelon baby now! I think that I am one of the few women in the world who didn't take a monthly belly shot (or more). I don't know if it's because I was afraid of something happening and having reminders everywhere, but this is the first real shot I've taken of the baby.

Please excuse the unmade guest bed and my swollen sausage fingers.

I've been really congested for about three weeks and finally went to the doctor today. She gave me an antibiotic, but I don't think I have an infection (she didn't mention one!) so I'm going to ask my OB if I should just wait it out or take the medicine. Blowing my nose every fifteen minutes has gotten old, but my biggest concern is being able to breathe through my nose during labor.

Yesterday was my last day in the office until after maternity leave which is a huge relief. My company is allowing me to work from home until the baby arrives and then I'll be off for 12 weeks! I'm so thankful for this flexibility and that I won't have to deal with a 2+ hour commute each day.

N & J have passed on their Orbit Stroller System to us which is one of the most generous gifts we've ever received. I installed the car seat base and car seat today and hope to take it to the Sheriff's office next week for an inspection. It's SO WEIRD to see the car seat in my car but I love it!

The official countdown is now 1 week and 6 days. WOW.

I hope to post nursery pictures tomorrow!

It's been a while

I've been so bad at keeping up with this, but now that I'm at the end of the pregnancy, I thought I should update a bit.

I'll be 37 weeks tomorrow and baby is doing well! And we're having a GIRL!!! She measured in the 61st percentile at our 35 week appointment/ultrasound. She's head down and has been kicking and thumping and moving around like crazy. I can just sit and stare at my belly movements for so long...it's so mesmerizing to watch her move!

We hired a doula named Becky and finished childbirth classes last night. I am going to try my hardest to do a natural birth and I'm very excited about it! I've read lots of books, watched The Business of Being Born (imo, a must-see for any expecting couple, especially in the United States!), asked Becky a million questions, and just feel GOOD about it. I know things could change very quickly during labor/birth so of course my prayer is just for a healthy baby, but I really hope it will be natural.

I am working in the office until the 15th and then will work from home for the last two-ish weeks of the pregnancy. After she arrives, I'll be home for 12 weeks so I won't be back to work until around June. James is taking off a month from work and I'm SOOOOO happy and relieved that we will have time together as a family. Just saying that makes me teary-eyed!

I've been craving extremely spicy food lately, but unfortunately it is not going to work out. I had acid reflux before becoming pregnant and now that the baby is so big and pressing on everything, the reflux has gotten 100x worse. I've woken up more than once with acid in my throat/nose, so no more spicy or acidic food for a while. :(

I still can't stand the smell of cooked broccoli or even the thought of seafood, but did have a bite of James' mahi mahi at dinner on Saturday and it was great. I think the big aversion is shrimp/crab legs since I got SO sick after eating both just around five weeks pregnant.

We had a baby shower in Virginia, hosted by my dear friends Nichole and Cat, with favors made by another great friend named Tate. There were about 30 people there which was wonderful and a little overwhelming. It didn't help that I was SO SICK with a really bad cold, but I managed to get through it and have a great time. The shower in Pennsylvania was the following weekend and it was much smaller but just as wonderful. My sister-in-law, best childhood friend, and mom did such an amazing job with all of the food and decorations!

The nursery is all set up with only a few finishing touches to be completed. The biggest one is a big tree vinyl decal to apply to one wall by the crib...I think that will take a while to put up! I ordered the baby's name spelled out in 6" wooden letters, and those will go on the shelf above our rocker/recliner.

I've pre-registered at the hospital, have my FMLA approved, and started the short term disability process...things are coming together! My biggest task now is to find a pediatrician since apparently the hospital won't let us leave without one! Two friends have recommended theirs, so I hope to talk to them when I work from home.

We found a daycare provider which is a huge relief. It's an in-home daycare and the provider used to be a Montessori school teacher with a bachelor's degree in Psychology (Child development). We instantly clicked! Her home is clean and bright and spacious and I'm so excited that she had space to take our daughter when we return to work. Baby will only have to go to daycare on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday since James is home on Mondays and I work from home on Fridays!

The countdown is now at 22 days...

Week 18 - Sweeeeeet Potato!

Week 18 - Sweet Potato
(September 22-28)

I've started to feel the baby move a bit, and I'm pretty sure I've been feeling this 'quickening' for at least a week or so. Sometimes it just feels like a little muscle spasm in my belly and other times it's more like a fluttery feeling. We have our second trimester ultrasound coming up on October 1st and it's all I can think about! Most people are saying girl and I have to agree...I feel like this little one is a girl. We'll see if I'm right!

I'm amazed at how hard the morning sickness hit me at the beginning and how good I feel now. I didn't know if I'd ever feel good again (you try being sick every day for about 10 weeks!) so this is such a relief. Whew! For me, morning sickness mostly felt like really really bad motion sickness. Sooooo happy that's behind me!

Week 17 - Onion

Week 17 - Onion
(September 15 - 21)

Vacation was sooooo relaxing! We had such a great time and it was so nice to not be running all about. I was up by 7am every day and in bed by 9pm almost every night. The exception was when my mom made me stay up and watch America's Got Talent with her. :) James and his dad rented sea kayaks for one morning, we took the dogs on lots of walks on the beach, visited the pier and watched the sunset, and did A LOT of sitting on the beach. My mom and I braved the waves on our last full day there and had so much fun splashing around.

Here's the view from the beach house:

And here's the gorgeous sunset we watched from the pier:
